Alex Eala has made history by becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a Grand Slam singles title . The young talent trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar had an immaculate US Open, not dropping a set and defeating third-seeded Czech Lucie Havlíčková 6-2, 6-4 in the final.
Eala achieved her first singles Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows after having won two other doubles titles in previous years. In 2020, she caused a major upset by winning the Australian Open at just 14 years old alongside Indonesian Priska Madelyn Nugroho , and the following year she reinforced her positive results by winning Roland Garros alongside Oksana Selekhmeteva, an edition in which she also reached the semifinals of the singles draw.
Alexandra Eala, who once reached number 2 in the world on the Junior circuit, has already received invitations to participate in both the Miami Open and the Mutua Madrid Open qualifiers. The young Filipina dazzled the world when she won her first professional title at just 15 years old at the ITF tournament held at her “home,” the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar. Her progress has been steady, and in 2022 she won her second ITF title in Thailand.
Adding to this great result for the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar in New York is the success achieved in the men’s junior draw by Martín Landaluce, a Madrid-born tennis player coached by Óscar Burrieza and a scholarship holder from the Academy, whose facilities he regularly uses as a training base.
Alex Eala is one of the stars of the documentary “Rafa Nadal Academy,” which can be seen on both Movistar+ and Amazon.
